Altered Art Projects ->
Background Effects

A great way to enhance your project is to start off with an interesting background. Using your art tools and some basic watercolors, these are some great ideas to get you started! Don't discount textured tools in other areas of your house- sponges, washcloths, saran wrap and foil are some things to start experimenting with. Don't fotget your regular art tools too- try a dry brush technique by dipping a wide dry paint brush in acrylic paint and brush in quick small strokes on your project surface.
  • Roll a soft rubber brayer over your inkpad and then over your paper.
  • Use a sponge to wipe watercolors onto your brayer and then roll onto your paper.
  • Tap a kitchen sponge on your stamp pad and then on your paper.
  • Tap a synthetic sea/ art sponge on your stamp pad and then on your paper.
  • Tap a natural sea sponge on your stamp pad and then on your paper. If the print is too patterned, cut the edge with pinking shears or rip it.
  • Use stipple brush on your stamp pad. Remember that the ink will stain the bristles, but as long as you wash it out, it won't get on your next project.
  • Use the stamp pad itself to color the background. This is from a colorbox fluid chalk inkpad.
  • Use your stipple brush with watercolors.
  • Use a kitchen sponge with watercolors.
