Making Paste Papers

You will need:
[ a paste recipe from below ]
coloring of some sort- powdered paints, gouache, poster paints, acrylics....
papers to paint on, construction paper works, or use heavier or larger paper
suggested: things to make patterns with- spools, combs, hair picks, sponges....
1. Completely cover your work area with newspapers. Yourself, the floor, rugs, the table, everything- maybe even the walls if you like to paint like that.
2. Lay out your paper. You can use a damp sponge to relax your paper if you wish.
3. Add color to your paste or dab some on your paper and then dab a handful of paste onto your paper.
3. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. Use your fingers to make spirals, wiggles, lines, plaids. Try different colored papers with contrasting or complementary paint colors. Use tools you can find around the house- how about the potato masher? pastry blender? Remember to make patterns, not images.
3. Allow the papers to dry flat overnight. If you would like, iron the papers on the back side when dry, to flatten and set colors. Use the finished product in collages and other artwork or as giftwrap, book covers- you name it!

Paste Paper Recipes

Cornstarch Paste
Mix 2 tbsp cornstarch and 2 tbsp of water in a small bowl.
Add to pan with 1 cup boiling water. Boil for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Pour into container and allow to cool. Use while still a little bit warm. This paste will keep 1-2 weeks in the refridgerator, but you may have to strain it to use again.
** I recommend that you add your color to a yogurt cup, about 1 tbsp, then add 3 large spoonfuls of the paste. Stir really well. Use a small handful on your paper. Make sure your paste is pretty thinly spread so you can see the paper color through the paste when you use tools. Works really well with lots of color types!
Cold Water Wallpaper Paste
Mix according to the instructions on the packet, but use less water, so that it is quite thick: the proportion will probably be 1 pint of water to 2 ounces paste powder.
Flour Paste
Add six parts cold water to one part plain flour, stirring to form a smooth paste. Bring to a boil in a saucepan, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
Vinegar Paste
Put 2 parts granulated sugar to one part malt vinegar in a screw-top jar and shake vigorously together.
Cake Flour Paste
Stir 1/3 cup cake flour into 2 cups cold water in a pot. Let sit five minutes. Bring to gentle boil, STIRRING. Then simmer about five minutes or until thickening. Keep watching and stirring while simmering.
