Crafting Your Space ->
Do you need a way to display all your lovely book creations? Putting books on a shelf is nice, but then all people see are the spines, and they aren't always tempted to open them and see what goodies lie inside!
Making a book quilt is a great way to display your treasured books and altered books, so viewers can take them out and open them, but then put them back and they are protected from dust! The quilt hangs on a wall, so it also takes up very little space. It could be used to display other items, like greeting cards or tags- whatever you wish it to!

What You Need: 2 yards of clear vinyl*, a sewing machine or needle and thread
Step 1: Fold the vinyl in half on the floor and smooth together to help keep it in place. Because it's vinyl, it will start to stick together, but this is okay, it will help you when you're sewing it.
Step 2: Sew a seam 1/2 inch away from the edge on all four sides of the quilt.
* I used a sewing machine, but if you have more time and less energy, you might want to hand sew it. Because vinyl is so stiff, I had to pull it through the machine and it's therefore very hard to line up your stitches. I did finish in an hour though.
Step 3: Decide if you want the quilt to hang vertically or horizontally. Decide which side is the top. Sew another seam 1 inch from the seam already made along the top.
Step 4: Using a ruler, design a grid pattern in which you will hold your books. For 3" X 5" books, make the cells 4" X 6", for 4" X 6" books, make the cells 5" x 7", etc.... Make cells of various widths and heights. You can mark spots* along each line with a thin permanent marker. Don't make more than a dot, though! You don't want permanent marker lines on your finished quilt!
** I did the vertical lines and when I was finished sewing, I marked and sewed the horizontal lines.
Step 5: Where the pockets look too long or too wide, sew another line in to create two pockets, so it's not a perfect grid.
Step 6: About 1/4" from the top of each cell, use an exacto knife to slice across the top. *** BE CAREFUL NOT TO GO THROUGH BOTH LAYERS!!!*** Practice on a doubled scrap of vinyl first!!! Then slide your books or objects into the pockets. Put in two or three large grommets or eyelets along the top to hang it with. If you don't want people handling the books, hang the quilt with the pocket side against the wall, so they can just look!
Variations: Use colored vinyl or fabric for the back piece.
store greeting cards or tags or shrines!
make all the cells the same size
