Crafting Your Space ->
Ethnic Style Wallhanging

What You Need:
15 6.5 inch squares of fabric (see comments, below)
1 yard black cotton fabric
black thread
3 45inch strips of black cotton fabric, 3 inches wide
1/2 inch wide dowel

Step 1:
Lay out the fabric squares to decide on a pattern.

Step 2:
Sew three squares together with a 1/5 inch seam to make a row. When all five of your rows are done, iron the seams open. Sew the rows together in the order you want them to be. Sew the black strips on to the bottom and the sides of the wall hanging. Sew right sides together.
Step 3:
Measure the finished width of your wallhanging. Cut the yard peice of black cotton to this width. Measure the height of your wall hanging. Cut the black fabric that measurement + 5 inches. This is the back.
Step 4:
Sew the black fabric to the front on the sides and the bottom - remember to put right sides together!
Step 5:
Turn it right side out and iron the sides. The top will have a 5 inch flap, and you should be able to reach right in.
Step 6:
Fold 1/2 inch of the flap towards the inside of the wall hanging and iron.
Step 7:
Fold the flap over, so it goes over the raw edge of the wall hanging about 1/2 inch. Sew it down very close to the edge.
Step 8:
This makes a tube area. Insert a dowel. Tie a ribbon to each end of the dowel and hang up.
The finished product! Hang on a wall!
Comments:
I chose metallic fabrics, but I think cotton, in batiks or ethnic prints would work better and easier! Choose fat quarters at your fabric store to avoid the lines at the fabric counter. You can even find them in packs for quilters, which is how I found mine.

I got this craft idea from World Market. Their's had a zig-zag stitch over the seams between the different squares. I decided to leave mine plain, but you could do that or quilt the wallhanging with simple embroidery floss knots in the corner of each four squares. If you're really into it, add a layer of batting between the layers and/ or quilt the whole thing really elaborately. You might embroider each square. The possibilities are endless!!!
